Poison in the hands of a doctor is a medicine and medicine in the hand of a fool is a poison” or “Knife is just a knife – what makes a difference is who is holding it.” How true? We are living in the times where new developments are taking place at a rapid rate, almost every second. Our preparedness will ensure that these new technologies – will ensure smart living or it is going to take us towards a dead end walking a unknown path. One thing is for sure, either you are consuming a technology or technology is going to consume you.

Artificial Intelligence – not just a buzzword anymore – today it has entered into our lives with a big bang.  It has its roots penetrated deep into our lives today. It seems that the sci-fi novels we use to read involving tech savvy ghost’s –  use to leave us mouth open sometime back – looks so real today.

Before we delve into this topic, I am quoting below some prominent people arguing upon AI (Artificial Intelligence) that might just amaze you.

“I’m more frightened than interested by artificial intelligence – in fact, perhaps fright and interest are not far away from one another. Things can become real in your mind, you can be tricked, and you believe things you wouldn’t ordinarily. A world run by automatons doesn’t seem completely unrealistic anymore. It’s a bit chilling.” —Gemma Whelan

“You have to talk about ‘The Terminator’ if you’re talking about artificial intelligence. I actually think that that’s way off. I don’t think that an artificially intelligent system that has superhuman intelligence will be violent. I do think that it will disrupt our culture.” —Gray Scott

“Artificial intelligence is growing up fast, as are robots whose facial expressions can elicit empathy and make your mirror neurons quiver.” —Diane Ackerman

“Artificial intelligence will reach human levels by around 2029. Follow that out further to, say, 2045, we will have multiplied the intelligence, the human biological machine intelligence of our civilization a billion-fold.” —Ray Kurzweil

“I visualize a time when we will be to robots what dogs are to humans, and I’m rooting for the machines.” —Claude Shannon

This technology merged with many others has powered and revolutionized numerous platforms.

Artificial Intelligence driven technology can include so many technologies, for example:

  • Voice recognition techniques
  • Integrated data platforms,
  • Chat bots,
  • Robotics and Embedded Systems
  • Data Sciences and Advanced analytics.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning together are being shaped into the next generation super high-tech possibilities that are for sure taking over the world – may be at slow pace right now (It is not that slow).

In recent times lots of AI-based tools have been developed and are also being integrated into so many areas:

  • Content management,
  • Data protection,
  • Backup and recovery,
  • IT services and
  • Performance management.

This clearly reflects that in near future more such types of enterprise software solutions will progressively develop with intelligent AI core. This AI core will be able to automatically identify and assess conditions and will also be able to make decisions about how to respond to such events.

Artificial Intelligence Algorithms will bring huge change

There is a belief system that says that AI is going to take away certain types of jobs from the market. There will be no requirement left for people like clerks, cashiers etc. It is believed that duties like cleaning, mopping floors, sweeping, taking out trash or even managing supply inventories will be wiped out. But the fact is that this technology will slowly infuse into almost all the segments of our lives.

AI is going to change how everyone works. In the time to come, and that not very far we all will witness the impact of AI absorbed into almost every job and will expand the human intelligence.

At present the way we function you will observe most of the tasks require repetitive tasks or pattern recognition – now it could be delegated to someone without as much context and creativity. Take for example:

For example if used in the field of medical sciences artificial intelligence will soon be able to detect and diagnose common diseases more quickly and accurately as compared to a doctor.

  • Imagine AI enabled computers that is capable of:
    • Reading a patient’s medical history,
    • Going through medical test results and scans,
    • Presenting doctors or tem of doctors with various possible diagnoses and
    • Probability of correctness of each diagnostic document
  • If that becomes a reality then not only it will save lots of time but doctors will:
    • Have more time interpreting the possible diagnoses,
    • Be able to spend more time with the patients
    • Be able to develop treatment plans that are more effective.

What one need to understand is that AI is evolving quite fast still it is very far from reality that it will replace doctors in the example above. But very soon you will find that AI will give a boost to the doctor’s capabilities and efficiency by many folds. So for now no one’s job is at risk but time to come is expecting and demanding people to do their job much better under the assistance of AI enabled environment.

As of now it seems AI has arrived and is going to affect the way we live and work. It will not take away our jobs for now but rather help us focus on key areas that are more important.

AI Algorithms are very attractive options for their capability to take well-informed decisions quickly and accurately. The impact of AI is immense it will affect masses and every walk of life. That is also the reason for worry because same power if used for wrong purpose. Due to any bad intension or by mistake if there is a small bug in AI algorithm it might take incorrect decisions. If that happens – it will occur with greater velocity thus having a widespread impact than humans have ever had.

Few of the AI usages that might just make you think again:

  • There have been evidences that FaceBook’s AI tools invades privacy by going through posts, private messages, photos and videos to draw some facts out of it regarding the likes and habits of individuals, for example:
    • What they are posting
    • Why they are posting
    • Their taste and dislikes, etc

On the basis of the facts collected delivers the necessary advertisement to that user. This type of advertisement is called targeted advertisement where a particular type of ad gets delivered to the person who has very high chances of buying that product.  For example If a person is talking about digital watch then that person may have the advertisement of a digital watch popping up.

As I started at the beginning – I will end it with a note – “It is not the technology or tool that is dangerous but those who are using it”. Governments, bigger authorities and related departments must ensure smooth transition from the current state to the next level AI talks about.

Conclusion

AI is there and going to stay and we are going to talk about it too often. Just keep yourself more aware and informed.
